Article: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Image

This October, Mount Hutton Medical & Skin Cancer Centre is helping raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women. Around 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed during their lifetime, but when detected early, treatment is often more effective, and outcomes are much better.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Check regularly: Get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you
notice any changes such as lumps, thickening, pain, nipple discharge, or skin
    changes, see your GP.
  • Book regular screenings: Women aged 50–74 are encouraged to have a free
mammogram every two years through Breast Screen NSW. Women aged 40–49
and those 75 and over are also eligible for free screening if they choose.
  • Know your risk: If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, speak
with your doctor about whether you need earlier or more frequent screening.

Our doctors are here to discuss your risk factors, arrange mammogram referrals, and provide support or further investigation if needed.

You can also call Breast Screen NSW on 13 20 50 to book your free mammogram.

Taking action today could make all the difference.
